Toshiba, HD DVD

It’s official.  is DOA.

Toshiba finally announced Tuesday what had been rumored for days—it is pulling out of the high-definition market.  Although the HD DVD system preceded Sony’s product, sales have steadily outpaced its competitor.

In the past few months, major studios have aligned themselves with the Sony brand.  Even though Paramount and Universal continued to offer their titles on HD DVD, it was clear the Toshiba format was being crippled.

Recent decisions made by Wal-Mart and Netflix helped drive a nail into the HD DVD coffin.  The companies announced they would no longer be making the high-def option available to its customers.

Shipments of the Toshiba systems will wrap up by March.

Dakota and Elle Fanning has dropped out of the film project My Sister’s Keeper, a movie which would have united Dakota and her little sister, Elle, in film for the first time. The elder Fanning passed on the film because the role called for her to shave her hair, so Elle quickly backed out as well.

Never fear - there are plenty of child actresses around. Er, maybe just one - . The Definitely, Maybe star (who is suddenly all over the place) will now take over for Elle Fanning while Sofia Vassilieva (from Medium) will fill in for Dakota.

Production will begin in March, barring any future major casting changes.

Put Description HereAlthough they survived a tumultuous relationship in Peggy Sue Got Married, and may now be heading to court.  The Ghost Rider star has just filed a defamation and libel case in London’s High Court based on statements his former co-star has made.

In Turner’s new autobiography, Send Yourself Roses: Thoughts on My Life, Love, and Leading Roles, the actress alleges Cage had problems with theft and drinking during the production of their 1986 movie.  In the book, she states:

“He caused so many problems. He was arrested twice for drunk-driving and, I think, once for stealing a dog. He’d come across a chihuahua he liked and stuck it in his jacket.”

Well Cage, 44, was not too pleased by those remarks (as proven by the suit) and has gone on the record denying her claims.  (I would think a quick background check would quickly settle this matter.  In fact, didn’t her book have a fact checker?)

Star Trek LogoWell, it looks like we’re going to have to wait a little longer to beam anyone up.

Those who made it out to see Cloverfield in the past few weeks got a sneak peek at another J.J. Abrams production: .  (If you haven’t seen the clip yet, you can view it after the jump.)  Unfortunately, a major part of that trailer is now no longer true.

The highly-anticipated prequel/sequel was slated to be released ‘Christmas 2008’.  What it should have said was ‘December….Give Or Take a Few Months.’

According to Variety, the movie’s premiere will remain ‘under construction’ until May 8, 2009.

The film was simply part of a major reshuffling in ‘s calendar.  In most cases, a changed date usually signals bad news; that’s not the case with Trek.  In fact, the studio believes the movie will benefit from this shift.

Actors involved in the next installment include Tyler Perry, , Zoe Saldana, Eric Bana, and Leonard Nimoy.

Choke crew celebrates at SundanceBoth film and book nerds alike have been watching cult author ‘s every move since Fight Club was released in theaters. While all of his novels are fully capable of becoming both marketable and move theater-friendly, his fourth novel, , has finally seen the light of day past the production floor. With Fox Searchlight having bought the film for $5 million and it winning a Best Ensemble Cast jury award at Sundance, the Choke crew and Palahniuk fans everywhere cannot be more ecstatic about the film’s release date of August 1, 2008.

Although the film is Clark Gregg’s directorial debut, he has certainly been no stranger to the industry nor the project, having gone through numerous obstacles to get his adaptation onto the big screen. His script is so good that even Palahniuk himself has done nothing but award it praise. With Palahniuk’s seal of approval and a lead cast including , Anjelica Huston, and Kelly Macdonald, nothing can go wrong, right?

Ellen Page, JunoAcademy Award-nominated director has just given us the best and worst news possible.  He loves his recent film, Juno, so much, he refuses to participate in any sequel.  (Of course, that doesn’t mean one couldn’t be made without him.)

What?  You didn’t know there was going to be a sequel?  Well, if common sense rules - there won’t be.  But apparently the movie’s $100+ million gross, Oscar noms and critical acclaim have earned the film just that type of buzz.

While some might consider that kind of talk disrespectful (Why would they dare ruin a perfect experience?), I think we should just consider the rumors to be a form of flattery (They only make sequels for good things, right?) and not entertain them any further.

Seriously.  We all need to let go.
